Marketing

Here’s a couple of quotes about marketing. The first one comes from Sergio Zyman, Coca-Cola’s former vice president of marketing:

The purpose of marketing is to sell more stuff to more people more often for more money in order to make more profit.

In relation to the typical managerial definition of marketing, which considers it “the art of selling products”, quoting Peter Drucker [1]:

There will always, one can assume, be need for some selling. But the aim of marketing is to make selling superfluous. The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well that the product or service fits him and sells itself. Ideally, marketing should result in a customer who is ready to buy. All that should be needed then is to make the product or service available.

This reminds me of the upcoming iPhone. If marketing did their job so far, which I think they did (I recognize, though, that opinions vary), all that’s necessary is to release it (which will happen soon).
